The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Netherland (VU Amsterdam) was founded in 1880. It is one of the biggest, public funded institutes in the city. In spite of the fact that founded as a private foundation, the VU has received government funding on an equality premise with state-funded institutes since 1970.
